Skin protection: an important preventative measure in the workplace

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It has an important protective function and supports humans in immune defence. In occupational environments, the skin is constantly exposed to numerous harmful influences. This increases the risk of skin conditions.

38% of all occupational illnesses are skin diseases, as the skin is exposed to many harmful influences in the work environment. One of the most common skin diseases is dermatitis, which is caused by allergenic materials, chemical, or even poisonous substances.

The costs incurred from lost working days are correspondingly high; likewise, healing from skin conditions often takes a long time. For these reasons, skin protection at the workplace is of great importance in order to maintain the healthy condition of the skin.

  • Comprehensive skin protection protects against injuries or skin damage caused by:
    • Working in a damp environment
    • Contact with hazardous substances (such as chemicals, etc.)
    • Physical effects (such as sharp edges or falling objects)
    • UV radiation (such as burns)

When skin is appropriately protected in combination with regular hand hygiene, absences due to illness and high costs for treatment can be reduced by up to 40%.

What to take into consideration when selecting products

So that your employees are optimally protected, skin protection starts even before work and is re-applied during work; these are preventative measures.
Skin protection prevents work materials from penetrating into the skin and serves as a protective barrier against harmful substances. This makes it easier to clean the skin.
Different skin protection products protect against things such as the following:

  • Extreme dirt
  • Strongly adhesive materials
  • Water-based materials or wet work
  • UV exposure
  • Build-up of moisture

Company skin protection plan – The perfect skin protection at work

We’ll help you set up a skin protection plan for your business

A skin protection plan details the risks your skin faces during each job performed at your workplace. The plan ensures that your workforce will all use the skin protection products the way they’re meant to. The skin protection plan also lists the skin protection, skin cleansing and skin care products to use in order to keep your skin protected properly.

Why is a tailored skin protection plan necessary?

Many companies use model skin protection plans that fail to account for all risks to the skin posed at the respective workplace, and which assume that the employees’ skin is healthy to start with. A tailored skin protection plan will accommodate the requirements specific to every employee and also detail skin protection measures and skin care appropriate to the workstation.

// FIRST AID

First aid in the workplace

Despite all precautionary and protective measures, employees may be injured while at work. In order to be able to help them quickly, first aid in the workplace is of utmost importance. The Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (German Social Accident Insurance – DGUV) recognises this term to mean “medical, organisational and supportive measures for individuals who are ill or injured by means of simple measures including the involvement of the emergency services”.

  • This includes items such as:
    • Dressing material
    • First aid boxes and cupboards
    • Eye washing

Depending on type and size of the business as well as the occupational risks present, one or multiple first aid kits with different contents may be required. A manufacturing or processing workspace with 21 to 100 workers, for example, requires one (1) occupational first aid kit with a large capacity, in accordance with DIN 13169.

Additionally, employers must fit signs within their business so that first aid facilities, storage locations for dressing material as well as first aid areas can be located quickly.
